Workshop on “Community Based Sustainable Management of Tanguar Haor Program"

IUCN Bangladesh Country Office organised a one-day workshop on the “Community Based Sustainable Management of Tanguar Haor Program (CBSMTHP)” on Tuesday, February 24, 2009 in Dhaka. IUCN Bangladesh on behalf of the Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEF) is implementing the program with financial support from Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC). In consideration of its global and national significance, Tanguar Haor has been declared an Ecologically Critical Area (ECA) of Bangladesh, and the country’s second Ramsar site. Full story.. |

Regional Director of IUCN Asia visits Tanguar Haor

IUCN Asia Regional Director, Ms. Aban Marker Kabraji visited Bangladesh from 18 May to 23 May 2008. During her stay in Bangladesh, she visited Tanguar Haor in Sunamganj district, a unique wetland ecosystem and a Ramsar site where IUCN Bangladesh is implementing a flagship project. “It is not often that we see such a pristine and beautiful area, with all the conditions just right for IUCN and its partners to make a difference to a truly unique ecosystem, and the people within it” said Ms. Kabraji after visiting the Tanguar Haor. First fish harvest since 2004 in Tanguar Haor

In a significant win for the people of Tanguar Haor, the Deputy Commissioner of Sunamganj launched a fish harvesting pilot programme on 16 January 2009 under the ‘Community Based Sustainable Management of Tanguar Haor’ project. This was the first formal fish harvest permitted in Tanguar Haor since the wetland was brought under strict protection by the Sunamganj District administration in 2004, and the ecological recovery afforded by a four year hiatus in fishing was reflected in the increased size of the individual fish caught Full story..
