Water Birds of Tanguar Haor DVD:

dvd cover image

Tanguar Haor, is one of the largest water bodies in Bangladesh, in the north-eastern Sunamganj district, at the foothills of the Indian Meghalaya hills. The Haor is a collection of water basins  created naturally with flowing rivers. Indeed, Tanguar Haor with its about 100 sq km or 10,000 hectares looks like a vast sea as it swells in the moonsoon.

It has a unique combination of natural resources and biodiversity – human and nature co-existing. The 135 species of fish, which make it the `mother fishery’ of the country, provide a living for the 56,000 people in the 88 surrounding villages and many other communities in downstream areas. It is also the habitat for about 208 bird species of which, 92 are water birds and 98 are migratory species. Nationally, it is an Ecologically Critical Area (ECA) and internationally, the 2nd `Ramsar’ site of Bangladesh. 1st one is the Sundarbans.

In 2006, the government launched a project so that the Government and citizens collectively take the responsibility to use and preserve the rich natural resources wisely. The project is implemented by IUCN Bangladesh on behalf of the Ministry of Environment and Forests, with the financial support from SDC.

During the winter months of November to March, the wetland transofrms into one of the most amazing spectacles of nature, close to half a million birds converge in this place at different stages of migration.

This DVD-ROM captures 50 water birds (resident and migratory) of Tanguar Haor with detail information on them. The purpose of the DVD-ROM is to raise awareness on this unique wetland and its attributes.
