The logo for the next IUCN World Conservation Congress has been officially unveiled. The Congress, to be held in Barcelona from 5-14 October 2008, will celebrate diversity and how natural diversity underpins social, cultural and economic diversity.

Galapagos Islands added to the World Heritage Danger List

28 July 2007

World Conservation Union warns the Galapagos Islands are under threat from the huge increase in tourists visiting the archipelago. The World Heritage Committee also added Niokolo-Koba National Park in Senegal to the list of World Heritage sites in danger.

Focus Group Meeting with Planning Officials of GoB

19 June 2007

A focus group meeting titled ‘Capacity Development for Sectoral Planning in Bangladesh’ was held at the Academy for Planning and Development (APD), Nilkhet, Dhaka, on 16th June 2007. The Honorable Secretary of the Planning Division, Ministry of Planning, Mr. Jafar Ahmed Chowdhury graced the session as the Chief Guest. The participants included high-level government officials of the Planning Division. Mr. Larry Maramis, Deputy Country Director of UNDP Bangladesh was also present as the Special Guest.

Multi-Stakeholder Consultation on the World Environment Day 2007

A half-day long multi-stakeholder consultation titled ‘Combating Climate Change: Institutional and Individual Capacity Development’ was held at Osmani Auditorium on 6th June 2007 to observe the World Environment Day 2007. Institution and Policy Support Unit (IPSU) of the Ministry of Environment and Forest, Department of Environment, Ministry of Environment and Forest and The World Conservation Union (IUCN) Bangladesh Country Office jointly organized the consultation meeting under the NCSA Project.

Mid-Term Workshop on NCSA

A two-day long mid-term workshop of National Capacity Self- Assessment (NCSA) for Global Environmental Management project was held at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre (BCFCC), Dhaka from 17th-18th April 2007. The Ministry of Environment and Forest and IUCN Bangladesh Country Office jointly organized this workshop. The project is supported by the GEF/UNDP.

Waterfowl census in Tanguar Haor

IUCN Bangladesh Country Office has organised a press conference at FEJB (Forum of Environmental Journalists of Bangladesh) auditorium in Dhaka, Bangladesh today to share results of the recent bird census conducted in Tanguar Haor. A team of experts lead by Dr. Ronald Halder, an eminent bird specialist of the country, conducted the waterfowl census.

IUCN Bangladesh in Swiss Festival 2006

The World Conservation Union (IUCN), Bangladesh Country Office participated at the festival. IUCN Bangladesh displayed their activities and publications and also arranged video shows entitled “Tanguar Haor” and “For a Better Tomorrow” in the booth. The first ever Swiss Festival in Bangladesh has taken place on 8-10 November 2006 to celebrate the 35 years of friendship between Bangladesh and Switzerland.

“The world’s banker to the poor” Muhammad Yunus receives 2006 Nobel Peace Prize

The World Conservation Union (IUCN) congratulates the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus and his Grameen Bank. Muhammad Yunus, often referred to as "the world's banker to the poor" is the founder of the Grameen banking system, which has been supporting millions of poor people through micro credits.
