| Ecosystem and Landscape Management (ELM)

The Ecosystem and Landscape Management unit of IUCN, Bangladesh has target of viewing the natural resource of the country at ecosystem level especially with respect to its degradation if any and envisage conservation through Protected Area system. In doing so, this unit intends to assess the trend, examine the sustainability and sensitize the controlling authorities towards sustainable management of the resource, create awareness among the adjoining community, employ the brushed-up indigenous knowledge and inculcate the participatory management approach for the conservation and sustainable development of the country’s natural resources at large. |

| OBJECTIVES |
The Ecosystem and Landscape Management unit aims to achieve following objectives:

- Support to and create awareness and better understandings of integrated sustainable land use models and practices towards the management of the country’s natural resources.
- Support to and generate community awareness, about the benefits as well the reciprocating responsibilities, towards a participatory management system for the country’s natural resources, to ensure sustainability and conservation of the ecosystems.
- Support to and provide technical assistance, using the IUCN’s global network if required, towards land-use alternatives such as nature tourism, forestry, wildlife ranching and hunting, etc. for sustainability and conservation of the country’s natural resources.

- Ecosystem restoration and management towards sustainable landscaping.

| MAJOR ACHIEVEMENT |
- Established IUCNB’s presence in the CHT
- Successful implementation of a pilot program on the restoration of degraded mangroves at Chakaria Sundarban.
- Development of a “Tool” to involve all stakeholders as participants in the restoration of degraded, hilly as well as coastal marine, ecosystems.
- Developed participatory pilot model for the restoration of degraded mangrove sites.

- Adaptation scenarios on the impact of climate change on existing ecosystems.
- Explore the avenues on CDM and carbon trade.
- Renewable energy resources towards sustainability of the ecosystem in the long run.
- Explore Community Forestry towards sustainability of natural resources at large, while generating livelihoods.
- Explore wildlife ranching and hunting in involving the communities towards the conservation and sustainable management of natural resources.
- Sensitise the natural resource controlling and managing authorities, towards the involvement of all stake-holders in the interest of conservation and sustainability of the country’s dwindling natural resources.
